Kerbside collection dates 2023
Kerbside collection is back in Chandler Ward, this year starting in the first week of March.
The schedule can be found in the photo above or alternatively at the bottom of this article as well as some quick collection guidelines and acceptable items list.
For those that are new or are unfamiliar with kerbside collection, it’s Council’s large item collection service that gathers unwanted household items that are often too big for wheelie bins (and too hard to take to the tip).
Construction of new shade sails at Bill McFarlane Park
Over the last year, I have received multiple requests for the playground in Bill McFarlane Park (off Olsen Cres) to be shaded, and I’m happy to say that new shade sails will be installed soon.
This $157,000 investment will see more than 500m2 of area shaded with commercial grade UV blocking fabric, covering both playground nodes.
More shade means cooler play equipment and less exposure to the harsh Queensland sun, making the playground safer for kids to play, learn and grow.
Manly Rd Greener Suburbs Project Update
I’m pleased to say that the first section of Council’s Greener Suburbs project has been completed on the corner of Manly Rd & Greencamp Rd and boy is it looking good!
In 2021, Council announced two Greener Suburbs projects along Manly Rd, the first at Greencamp Rd and the second at Hargreaves Rd.
The latter project, which is due to take place this year, aims to improve the clean, green feel of our suburbs through tree planting and landscaping.
Kerbside collection resumes - updated dates March 2022
I’m pleased to announce that kerbside collection is resuming after being temporarily paused to assist in the cleanup of the floods.
The flood affected items cleanup collected nearly 50,000 tonnes of waste and was very successful in helping clean up Brisbane.
Under our new schedule, the suburbs skipped over the pause period are having their annual collection rescheduled to the Easter School Holidays.
Manly Rd Greener Suburbs Project
In late 2021, Council announced two Greener Suburbs projects along Manly Rd at its intersections with Greencamp Rd and Hargreaves Rd.
These programs aim to impove the clean, green feel of locations across Brisbane through increased tree planting and landscaping.
It certainly adds to the character of neighboring Wakerley and the eastside as the program continues to move into more suburbs.
Kerbside collection dates 2022 (outdated)
Everyone’s favourite time of the year has returned a year ahead of schedule - Kerbside collection is back in Chandler Ward, starting in mid-February.
The schedule can be found in the photo above or alternatively at the bottom of this article as well as some quick collection guidelines and acceptable items list.
For those that are new or are unfamiliar with kerbside collection, it’s Council’s large item collection service (like TV’s, fridges, you name it!) that gathers unwanted household items that are often too big for wheelie bins (and too hard to take to the tip).
Chelsea and Rickertt Rd Update - November 2021
The Chelsea Rd and Rickertt Rd upgrade is progressing incredibly well, with 75% now complete on the intersection and over 80% of the Wakerley Bikeway complete.
Despite the week lost due to wet-weather, the project is still on track to open mid-December and in time for Christmas.
Chelsea/Rickertt Rd Upgrade Update
Council's upgrade of the intersection of Chelsea and Rickertt Road is well underway, with better access through Wakerley and Ransome just around the corner coinciding with Council's construction of the Wakerley Bikeway.
Work has commenced on duplicating Rickertt Rd at the intersection with landscaping and the installation of new traffic islands to commence soon.
Torrens Crescent Park is now shady!
The sun is out and the shade is in as Wakerley parents and kids will be keeping cool from now on in Torrens Crescent Park! Council has now finished installing two shade sails over the play equipment.
Wakerley Bikeway & Chelsea / Rickertt Rd construction starting soon
I’m pleased to announce that better access through Wakerley and Ransome is just around the corner with Council’s upgrade of the Chelsea Rd and Rickertt Rd intersection coinciding with construction of the Wakerley Bikeway.
Wakerley District Sports Park opens
A few weeks ago, I had the honour of officially opening the Wakerley District Sports Park with Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, Cr Lisa Atwood and Netball Queensland CEO Catherine Clark.
Work has now been completed on the $7.2 million project, with Wynnum Manly District Meals on Wheels successfully moving into the building in May and the first netball game being played on the new courts early in July.
Ward boundary changes
The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) has today finalised their boundary review of Brisbane City Council wards.
Wakerley Sports Park progresses to next stage
Work on the Wakerley Sports Park has met another milestone, with the Wynnum and Manly District Meals on Wheels making the move from Tingal Road, Wynnum into their new building.
Wakerley Meals of Wheels begin to take shape
I'm pleased to advise that after significant delays, work is finally progressing on the Wakerley Meals on Wheels Centre and Netball Courts.
Council's original concept design featured eight courts, and as such a significant requirement for new car parking, which some local residents viewed as an over-development of the site.
This final proposal represents a good balance of usability for Netball and development sensitive to local residents and the Meals on Wheels facility.
Tilley Road to reopen in time for Christmas
Council's $28M Green Camp Road corridor upgrade continues to move ahead with Tilley Road set to reopen from next week. The upgrade reached a new milestone in November, with the concrete culverts used to drain water underneath Tilley Road, now in place. The project is on track for completion in 2019.
New footpaths connections for Hemmant and Wakerley
Council has just completed major footpath projects in both Hemmant and Wakerley in response to requests from local residents for improved pedestrian infrastructure. But there’s always more to be done.
Meadowlands Rd & Belmont Rd Intersection Upgrade NOW COMPLETE
The Meadowlands Road and Belmont Road intersection was identified as a location within the local road network that required an upgrade to reduce congestion, improve safety and cater for future traffic demands.
Construction began in mid-April 2018 and has now been completed.
Wakerley Updates: Basketball court and Dog-off leash area
As many know, I was recently approached by a Year 10 student, Sam Atkins. Sam identified that the Mossvale Estate at Wakerley was in need of park facilities to cater for both teenagers and adults, and suggested a basketball court.
He set up an e-petition calling on Council to install a basketball court within the estate.
The petition received 226 signatures and called for Council to work with the residents of the Mossvale on Manly Estate to install a basketball court within the estate.
Green light for Green Camp Road
Last March, the Lord Mayor and I committed to improve the intersection of Green Camp and Tilley Roads during this term.
I’m excited to announce the Lord Mayor’s 2017-18 budget has allocated $8.643 million to improve this local transport network.
