Manly Rd Greener Suburbs Project
In late 2021, Council announced two Greener Suburbs projects along Manly Rd at its intersections with Greencamp Rd and Hargreaves Rd. These programs aim to impove the clean, green feel of locations across Brisbane through increased tree planting and landscaping.
It certainly adds to the character of neighboring Wakerley and the eastside as the program continues to move into more suburbs.
This program is part of the Schrinner Council’s commitment to growing a greener Brisbane through planting more trees and installing subtropical boulevards along our arterial roads adding to Brisbane’s desirability.
The projects along Manly Rd aim to:
Provide additional shade trees to create lush, subtropical boulevards
Enhance driver and pedestrian experience of streetscapes
Provide attractive, colourful planting and memorable landscape design at key nodes to assist with legibility and wayfinding
You may not know, but Brisbane has more tree cover than any other Australian capital with our total tree canopy cover being over 40% across the local government area.
This tree canopy helps to combat the Queensland heat by making parts of Brisbane up to seven degrees cooler than areas without trees.
These trees also help reduce energy consumption, trap carbon, help to reduce greenhouse gases, support animal habitat and reduce pollution.
Planting and maintaining these trees ensure that Council continues to care for Brisbane and its urban forest that residents benefit from.
Manly Rd/Greencamp Rd
The wide verge at the corner of Manly Rd and Greencamp Rd offers a chance for a larger feature fig tree and expansive, colourful understory planting.
By using the above design, this will become a feature node within Wakerley & Manly West.
This section of the project is currently under construction, with landscape commencing in February 2022.
Manly Rd/Hargreaves Rd
Existing trees at the edge of Manly Rd/Hargreaves Rd are to be retained except for the small trees along the western verge of Hargreaves Rd (which are underperforming).
This will be replaced with new turf and a new extended garden bed with further trees.
Across Manly Rd on the south side, a tree grove will be planted that will compliment the bushland behind it.
If this cannot be achieved, erosion control matting will be installed.
Aside from the specifics, this project will brighten the Brisbane suburb. This program is just one of the ways the Schrinner Council is keeping Brisbane clean, green and sustainable.

I look forward to seeing these projects completed and witnessing the positive impact they will have on the character of our suburbs.
