Shade is coming to Grandview Place Park☀️

4 Months ago we officially opened Grandview Place Park, Carindale.

Since the opening I have had residents tell me how great the playground is and how popular it is, however, they have said with Summer approaching it is starting to get very hot during the day and shade is needed.

I am pleased to advise that I have been able to organise for shade sails to be installed at the playground next month (October 2023) just in time for Summer.

2023/24 Council Budget -Chandler Overview

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has handed down Brisbane City Council’s Budget for 2023/24, where 87 per cent of the Budget spend will be in Brisbane’s suburbs, in line with his Council’s Suburbs First Guarantee.

While this Budget is focused on keeping costs down, it’s important we continue to invest in projects that will keep Brisbane moving and ensure our city remains clean and green. We are also focusing on record investment in building road infrastructure, both for cars and buses.

Carindale’s hidden enchanted forest

Have you ever driven past Carindale and wondered if there was more to the area than just suburban homes, beautiful parks and roads? Well, it turns out that there is, and it's in the form of an enchanted forest.

Located on Belmont Hill, this section of private property covers a large proportion of the area and is home to a variety of flora and fauna that you may have only seen in the movies. During my recent visit, I was able to spot a yellow breasted robin, a black falcon, swamp wallabies, and even a net casting spider.

What's even more remarkable is that this forest wasn't always here. In fact, it was a former pineapple farm before Nancy Cramond and her family took it upon themselves to regenerate the land and create an oasis for nature to thrive. Since the 1960s, the Cramonds have been working hard to preserve the area between Ewer St and Scrub Rd and transform it into a beautiful reserve.

Council unanimously calls on State to build new schools in the Eastern suburbs

Last week in Council, Cr Steven Huang, Councillor for MacGregor Ward moved a motion that called on the State government to purchase land to build new schools to cater for our growing population and to consult Council on the infrastructure needs to cater for increasing student enrolments.

I was more than happy to second the motion as the State Government and local member Corrine McMillan have been brushing residents’ concerns aside for far too long and blaming Council for the traffic issues surrounding Mansfield, Mt Gravatt, and Wishart.

Much to my surprise, the motion received bi-partisan support from opposition Labor Councillors and passed with 21 votes in favour. Recognising the fact that the State Government has not been working with Council when it comes to expanding school capacity.

Go East! Taking the Brisbane Metro from Coorparoo to Capalaba

Council has announced that it has partnered with the Redlands City Council and the State Government to fund the Eastern Metro Study which will investigate providing a Brisbane Metro route from Coorparoo to Capalaba.

This is great news for residents of the eastern suburbs as this would enable tens of thousands to gain access to fast, efficient, zero-emission public transport.

While the original 2026 Eastern Busway was defunded, with the Olympics coming in 2032 we have an opportunity to deliver a Metro line to service the seven Olympic venues in the eastern suburbs, whilst providing public transport access where residents need it the most.

Multiple parks to receive shade sails in new program

I’m pleased to announce that multiple parks across the ward will be receiving shade sails as part of Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner’s new Sun Safe Suburban Playgrounds program.

The $10 million, three-year effort will ensure that there is shade at every playground in Brisbane, protecting parents, carers, and kids while potentially saving lives as Council looks to reduce sun exposure.

More than 40 playgrounds will be retrofitted across the city with shade covers under the program with three local suppliers contracted to manufacture the sails across the city

Kerbside collection is back in Chandler Ward, this year starting in the first week of March.

The schedule can be found in the photo above or alternatively at the bottom of this article as well as some quick collection guidelines and acceptable items list.

For those that are new or are unfamiliar with kerbside collection, it’s Council’s large item collection service that gathers unwanted household items that are often too big for wheelie bins (and too hard to take to the tip).

Some residents may remember that the playground at Grandview Place Park had been fenced off for many months.

Council officers assessed the tree in November last year and found that the Crow’s Ash Tree which the playground sits beneath is becoming unstable and recommended the playground be removed.

Despite the removal, I’m pleased to advise that I have secured funding for the playground to be replaced this financial year.
