Newnham & Wecker Rd Upgrade construction begins

The roadwork signs are out, the plans have been finalised and the funding has been allocated - I’m pleased to announce the Newnham/Wecker Rd intersection upgrade is underway, which means improved safety, connectivity, network reliability and reduced congestion are only a few months away.

Part of this early construction work is establishing the site compound in Graham Lord Park, with public utilities being relocated whilst the site is there. The early work will also include vegetation removal in order to make way for the intersection expansion.

Whilst some vegetation is being removed to make way for the upgrade, Council will be planting over 300 groundcover vegetation plants and trees in the local area by the end of the project.

The upgrade will see new parkland added with the resumption of several properties along Newnham Road.

Improvements include:

✓ A new right turn lane into Wecker Rd from Newnham Rd (northbound)

✓ An additional right turn lane from Wecker Rd into Newnham Rd (northbound)

✓ A new signalised pedestrian crossing of the left turn slip lane on Newnham Rd (southbound)

✓ Coordination of traffic lights at Newnham Rd/Creek Rd and the new intersection

✓ Improved footpaths, shared paths and pedestrian crossing facilities at the traffic lights

Final design for the upgrade of Newnham and Wecker Rd intersection

CONSTRUCTION IMPACTS

Residents and businesses in close proximity to the intersection may experience:

  • increased noise from general construction activity

  • increased truck movements

  • low levels of vibration and dust

  • temporary traffic changes including lane closures and reduced speed limits

  • temporary detours for pedestrians and cyclists.

Major construction starts in December 2021, weather permitting, with works being carried out from Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5pm.

Some resurfacing works will occur Sunday to Thursday from 7pm to 5am in order to minimise traffic impact.

Council will be providing advanced notification to residents of any anticipated night works throughout the construction period and I thank residents for their patience as this upgrade comes to fruition.

There will also be several changed traffic conditions, with several expected lane closures, speed restrictions and detours. Traffic control and signage will be present in order to notify residents of any changed conditions so there is no need to fret when trying to cross into Creek Rd.
