The Carindale Library extension is underway!
I’m very excited to announce that the upgrade of one of Carindale’s incredible icons has now commenced.
As one of the Council’s most popular libraries, the Carindale Library has been loved to death over the years.
Back in 2020, I announced alongside Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner that the Carindale Library would be receiving a $1 million upgrade that would see a large improvement to the services it offers the public.
THE HISTORY
The Carindale Library was first opened in 1999 by then Lord Mayor Jim Soorley.
The library was last upgraded in 2012 when Westfield Carindale underwent its major renovations and currently features a quiet room, news lounge, youth and children’s area (with Xbox consoles!) as well as computers and two community meeting rooms.
THE UPGRADE
These latest works will see an increase to the size of the library by 460m² after Council signed a new lease with Westfield, with the library taking over the previously vacant shopfront beside it.
This expansion will provide even more flexibility when it comes to library programs and quiet rooms.
The extension will also see increased lounge and study seating as well as an adult maker space to support digital literacy and lifelong learning.
Construction is expected to finish in July 2021 with the majority of work happening in the adjacent building (as well as outside library hours) to minimise the impact on patrons and staff.
During construction, the library will only be accessible through its main entrance via the elevator and street front on Millenium Blvd.
Strong financial management thanks to the Schrinner Council means we can continue to invest and improve Brisbane’s community facilities.
