Carina Library Upgrade gets underway

PRESENTING GOLD STAR AWARDS AT CARINA LIBRARY

A new chapter for the Carina Library is about to be written, with Brisbane City Council soon commencing major upgrade works at the facility.

Lifestyle Chairman Krista Adams said the $778,000 project would include a complete refurbishment to modernise the library and enhance its overall look and feel.

“Our libraries are no longer just a place to borrow books, they have become bustling community hubs offering a range of services and entertainment for local residents,” Cr Adams said.

“This project will include a reconfigured floor plan and a complete refurbishment inside and out to help ensure the library is a vibrant space for people of all ages to enjoy.

Cr Adams said works would commence early next month with a range of new and exciting features planned for the facility.

“Works will include replacing furniture, carpet and wall paint to reflect a brand new modern look as well as a brand new children’s area for reading and learning through play,” she said.

“Council will also be installing the latest technology for managing customer loans, including the SmartBlades check-in system which enables automated and immediate return of items to the library collection.

“The new facility will also include a new community meeting room, improved landscaping, and an overhaul of the current service desk to maximise floor space for library visitors.”

Local Councillor Ryan Murphy said the project would revitalise the facility and encourage more people to make use of their local facilities.

“Carina Library first opened in March 1966 with more than 53,000 people visiting the facility last year alone,” Cr Murphy said.

“This refurbishment will give residents improved access to a modern and well-resourced library that will continue to grow with the community.”

This financial year Council is spending $3.9 million on library upgrades.

Council also opened the refurbished Holland Park Library in September 2015, Mt Ommaney Library in March 2015 and the Grange and Coopers Plains Libraries in 2014.

The Carina Library upgrade is expected to be completed in the New Year.
