Lytton Road Upgrade begins

The $3.5 million upgrade of Lytton Road has now begun.

This package of works will have enormous benefits to local residents, commuters and cyclists, by improving the safety and design of Lytton Road.

The project will reconstruct the Lytton Road pavement between Creek Road and the Gateway Motorway on-ramp and extend existing pavement width to incorporate new on-road bicycle infrastructure that includes:

  • a two-metre-wide on-road bicycle lane for eastbound commuters on Lytton Road from near Creek Road to Administration Road (on the uphill grade)

  • widening the westbound kerbside lane to 4.2 metres to allow cyclists to travel beside the main traffic stream.

ROAD WIDENING TO ACCOMODATE A NEW BIKE LANE

The project is constructing the on-road bicycle lane for eastbound cyclists on the uphill grade as this is where there is the greatest difference in speed between bicycle riders and vehicles. The on-road bicycle lane will be approximately 520 metres long.

To accommodate the on-road bicycle lane and the widened westbound traffic lane, the existing culvert will be extended. The existing timber bridge over the stormwater creek will be removed and a three-metre-wide shared path will be constructed as part of a new culvert structure. The existing through-traffic lanes on Lytton Road will be retained.

ROAD WIDENING TO ACCOMMODATE THE NEW BIKE LANE

Due to the busy nature of Lytton Road, some construction work will be carried out at night. Upon commencement these night works will be carried out from Sunday night to Thursday night between 7pm and 5am.

Council is committed to keeping the community informed of construction activity in their area and will provide advance notification before the start of the night works and activities likely to cause disruption during the construction period.

SITE PREPARATION BEGINS

Obviously there will be some impacts to residents during construction, Council will do everything possible to minimise this.

However, I assure you that the benefits of upgrading this road will be worth it in the long run.
